Our Philosophy

Our Artisans

“On gloomy winter days, I go to Casita Azul and I feel like the sun is shining. It changes my whole perspective.”

—Casita Azul customer

At Casita Azul, we gather our pieces from individuals and cooperatives in Mexico, Latin America, Africa, Asia and the U.S. and the Caribbean. All of our products are fair trade; we believe in supporting local artisans with a fair living wage.

In Mexico, we have spent years traveling to towns and villages throughout the country, personally meeting with artisans and getting to know their work and their stories. There’s the family of silversmiths from Taxco who replicate the jewelry creations of Hector Aguilera; the Oaxacan villages specializing in wood carvings, Zapotec rugs, tin art and black pottery; the women’s prison cooperatives that create purses out of snack wrappers; and the Huichol Indians of Western Mexico who craft beautiful beaded and yarn art. Each offers fascinating insight into the local culture and customs.

From artists in the United States, we have handcrafted graphite sculptures, blown glass art balls, greeting cards, jewelry and more.

We work with cooperatives to bring you indigenous art from Africa, Asia and elsewhere. These wholesalers ensure that artists get decent living wages for their creations.
